About this place

Namcha Barwa stands at the eastern end of the Himalaya on the border between Mainling and Medog in Nyingchi, southeastern Tibet, rising to 7,782 m; it is the easternmost of the world's peaks above 7,600 m. Its Tibetan name means spear that pierces the sky, taken from the Gesar epic, and it is a sacred site of Bon and called the father of Tibet's mountains. The peak towers over the south side of the great bend of the Yarlung Tsangpo, facing Gyala Peri across the river; together they flank the deepest canyon on Earth. Its summit is snow-covered all year and wrapped in cloud through the rainy season. First climbed on 30 October 1992 by eleven members of a Chinese–Japanese expedition, it has never been summited again. In 2005 Chinese National Geography ranked it first among China's ten most beautiful mountains.
