Common questions

Regions, export formats, and what you can do with a model once it's yours.

What is AnyTerrain?

AnyTerrain is a browser-based tool for creating 3D terrain models from anywhere on Earth. Search for a place or select an area on the map, and it generates a printable terrain model from real elevation data. Once you've shaped its look and geometry, export it as STL, OBJ, DAE, or 3DM for 3D printing, CAD, or rendering. No installation and no signup required.

Do I need an account or a paid plan?

Selections up to 100 km² are free and need no login or signup — just open the app and go. If your area exceeds 100 km², a fee applies. That fee mainly covers the cloud-service costs of generating larger terrain.

Which file formats can I export?

You can export STL, Wavefront OBJ, Collada DAE, and Rhino 3DM (v7 and v8). STL is commonly used for 3D printing; OBJ and DAE work with many 3D tools; 3DM is for Rhino.

Where does the elevation data come from, and how detailed is it?

Models are generated from public digital elevation model (DEM) data and refined with interpolation. Terrain detail depends on the source data, its resolution, and the size of your selection.

How large or small can a region be?

Selections can cover about 10–46,000 km², with a length-to-width ratio within 5:1. You can choose locations worldwide, subject to the app's area and shape limits.

How do I choose the area to model?

Search a place name, drag a rectangle on the map, or draw a polygon with the pen tool. If you already have a boundary file, you can also upload it as GeoJSON or KML.

Can I shape the model before exporting?

Yes. Parameters you can tune include smoothing (Kriging smoothing — a larger σ gives a smoother surface), height exaggeration, base thickness, contour interval and color, step terrain (snapping the surface to contour levels to form flat steps), color palette and gradients, and satellite-imagery texturing. You can also overlay imported GPS tracks. Adding a base slab makes the model a closed solid that is ready to print.

Which GPS data formats can I import?

Three formats are supported — GeoJSON, KML, and GPX — covering both GPS tracks and point data. After importing, you can toggle visibility, snap the lines to the terrain surface, and adjust line width and color. If the imported data doesn't overlap your current terrain selection, the import is rejected.

Can I preview and share a terrain?

Yes. The workspace shows a live 3D model you can orbit, with adjustable lighting — nothing downloads until you hit Export. Share copies a link that reopens the same region and camera view on any device, in any of the three supported languages.

Can I embed a terrain in my site?

Yes. After generating a terrain, click "Get embed code" in the workspace to get an `<iframe>` snippet. Paste it into any page's HTML to embed the current terrain and camera view. The embedded view renders only the 3D viewport — the control panel and branding badge are hidden — and its width adapts to the container.
