About this place
Wugong Mountain is a granite massif in western Jiangxi on the border with Hunan, forming the northern section of the Luoxiao range and spanning the Pingxiang, Yichun and Ji'an districts. Its summit, Baihe Peak, also called the Golden Summit, rises to 1,918 m and is the highest point in Jiangxi. The mountain is celebrated for one of the largest alpine meadows at such a low latitude in China: above roughly 1,600 m the ridge is blanketed by more than 100,000 mu of rolling grassland that turns green in spring, gold in autumn and white under winter rime. Granite peak-forest scenery, deep gullies, waterfalls, seas of cloud and occasional Buddha's halo draw photographers and trekkers, and a cable car now eases the climb. Historically Wugong ranked with Mount Lu and Mount Heng as one of the three famous mountains of Jiangnan, and the Taoist masters Ge Xuan and Ge Hong are said to have pursued alchemy on its slopes, leaving ancient stone altars near the summit. Today it is a national scenic area, geological park and forest park, popular for overnight camping, sunrise viewing and its lingering Nuo folk traditions.
